I went to Tahiti last year and it was great. If you want the "Mutiny on the Bounty" feeling you’ll have to go to other islands like Maupiti, Huahine or Hiva Oa. A good book about the different parts of French Polynesia is this guide by Jan Prince: http://www.amazon.ca/Tahiti-French-Polynesia-Guide-4th/dp/1593600364 I studied it religiously before my trip.

The actual island of Tahiti is somewhat industrialized since it’s where the main airport and docks are. The outlying islands are much more secluded, although on some islands (mostly Bora Bora) it’s become commercial (lots of hotels). We were actually disappointed there because of all the light pollution at night. On Moorea we were far away from civilization and we saw the stars beautifully. We even saw the Milky Way, which I’d never seen before.

It really is a paradise, though. http://www.cuti.com.my/album/albums/Tahiti_BoraBoraIsland/Bora-Bora.jpg The water really is that shade of blue/green, the locals are really friendly, and the scenery is jaw-droppingly beautiful. My husband and I did Tahiti/Moorea/Bora Bora over 8 nights and we took over 3,000 pictures. We hiked to a waterfall, we snorkeled with the sting rays and sharks, we kayaked in the lagoon, we took 4×4 tours of the mountains – it was all so amazing and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
