These gentle sting rays allowed us to pat them. The guy in the wetsuit is feeding them pilchards. I am the tall, plump, blonde woman wearing the navy/black one-piece.

Why do people think they are so dangerous?
Its after the steeve erwin accident that people started to get worried about them.

They have barbs that can be pretty mean
I have done this 9 times. The rays are very friendly, like puppies, they enjoy comng up to you and going to your chest. So ladies…….push them down slowly and they will move on to someone else. They can be fed with fresh cut fish and place it underneth their mouth which will suck up the food like a vacuum. They are soft on the top and also their skin is like sandpaper. Moorea is my island.
They are evil. They killed Steve Irwin !!
they arent usually fatal but if you get stung o my god have fun it hurts soooo bad
I wonder if they are still there? Did they become too reliant on human contact? Are they still trying to cuddle up to unsuspecting snorkelers? (Club Med Moorea, who ran these trips, has shut down)

I did this on my honeymoon in Moorea. Albert Tours was the agency that we went with, but there are other tour agencies that lead “swimming with rays” trips. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. The stingrays are like dogs just after you’ve gotten home after a long day of work — jumping all over you, happy to see you.
We did this early ‘09 and loved it. We didn’t feed them, though. They seemed curious to be around. They did not feel threatened so I don’t think they would have hardened their barbs. Some black tip reef sharks also showed up and I touched them too.
Sting rays are about as dangerous as a puppy, it was unfortunate what happened to Steve irwin, but the ones he was with were much more bigger than what i have been with, The only scary thing the stingray does is flap water, and how it sucks up the food from your hand. they were pretty cool, did this once but i didnt submerge fully into the water

Ah I remember when I was in moorea a couple monthes ago:) went stingray and shark petting with the same guy in the wetsuit.. Going back most likely in July – October:) can’t wait I loved it there sooo muchXDDD
