Hey sprgirl1001… :) …. the thigh movements are important… that’s what helps lift the hips to give it that sway. Top half has to be still and flowing…Speed everything up and it looks like major shaking.

lol@chubbie…. you need to check out some Cook Island (Raro) dancing…. superslim chicks really thrashing their hips about…

    It’s beautiful! :)

  • smusrasrik

3:58 she’s pretty skinny, it’s all in the hips

  • vizeck

man all these women are BEAUTIFUL!
    they dance great too!

  • autreeisthebest

i agree with you, except for the last sentence.
tahitians barely ever know about these things, and don’t really care, because it’s not even a celebration of their culture, its just the dance and how fast you can move your hips, which is not what the real dance is about at all.
    i’ve never heard of a tahitian jealous of a non-polynesian dancer…ever.

  • Gille87

well I can’t remember I wrote tahitians, I ment other pollys….I that’s what really funny, cuz it’s not their dance, and it’s non tahitian people that bash others who’s non polly for dancing tahitian, so they’ve no reason for hating on others…

  • autreeisthebest

ohhhh…okay, now i get what you meant.

i guess i’m the only tahitian that bashes non-polynesians then, haha.

  • Amandork456

haha. no she was referring to other islands as in other hawaiian islands AND ALSO california n japan. lol

  • Tuailani

I AGREE!! I am Samoan. I have performed and competed polynesian dance & I see that to non polys it is not about the story or the historical significance, it’s seen more as a sport. Reverance and respect for our culture is missing. R we jealous of a non poly who ‘thinks’ they are better at our dances…..no. We carry the spirit behind the dance because we are true polynesians, no one can mimic that. :@)

  • autreeisthebest

    yes, thank you!
i am not the only polynesian that thinks this! it makes me sad because all true polynesian culture is slowly being manipulated :(

  • roadyrider

All of the girls are beautiful but, girl #100 at 3:20 is especially beautiful!

  • marszenka

I was lucky enough to take a Polynesian dance course at my University this semester—we learned a little bit of everything. :) Hula, Tahitian, Samoan, Tongan, Maori. Obviously not enough to get really good at anything, or even to get really in depth, but I know that my class really appreciated the opportunity to learn about these beautiful cultures and different forms of dance. I would love to take full-time lessons if I could, but that would mean choosing one style and that’s impossible! Dont

  • marszenka

hate on non-polys, as you put it. Of course there are some who are only in it for sport and trophies, but you’re crazy to think that there aren’t a few Polynesians who do the same thing. People are people regardless of heritage and there are good and bad apples in every basket. :) Honestly, it just feels good to dance. Irish step, bhangra, ballet, hula, you name it—a real dancer finds joy in the music and the movement and that has nothing to do with where they are from.

  • lokir

    Nice comment. :o )

  • yubeach1001

@ polynesian culture is slowly being manipulated..
    YES, sadly :-(
Did you guy know that ALL the knowlege about tahiti nui is GONE?
In eary days, the misionaris take the tahitian and other polynesian dances away… so, most knowlege about it is gone.

I think that these competitions are just for showing off. And indeed, how fast you can shake your hips.

@yubeach1001 this is true of most, if not all native cultures in the western hemisphere sadly. i’m a powwow dancer on the east coast, and it’s sad to know that most people in the circle don’t know what they are doing a lot of the time. they wouldn’t know what to tell you how a Oneida person did ceremony compared to how a Seminole did ceremony. At powwows here, it seems it’s all about how rich you can dress.

  • silverbatwing

@marszenka very true! there are a few people in every culture that are only in it for the money and fame and don’t care about the purpose, importance, and reverance. there are people here at powwow that do the same thing! and, i may be native, but i have enjoyed many forms of dance besides powwow (my category is Woman’s Traditional). i’ve done ballet, tap, jazz, irish step, folk dance, and currently in belly dance.

  • marszenka

You lucky! Native dance is beautiful and I’ve always wanted to learn….be grateful you’re allowed to know it and for heaven’s sake pay attention to Oneida vs Seminole ceremonies so the knowledge doesn’t go out the window. :) Good for you for trying so many different styles. Isn’t dance fun?! I wish I had more talent for it.

  • moa1010

    @yubeach1001

Yep, true. i bet they danced(early ages) much relaxer then what they do now.
prob with their feet more apart…

now it’s like they are in pain :o when they dance…

    xx

  • tadek195409

    Beautiful scenery and a girl

  • Gille87

@yubeach1001 well that’s maybe the case in the US, but in Tahiti Nui it’s different, it’s not the speed of ones fa’raapu who makes the dancer, also grace, stamina, posture, stage presence, and if the dancer tells the story!

  • 1990babyface

@jjjjjjjj8 I wish I could talk to a beautiful Hawaiin Girl on Skype. Are there any beautiful hawaiin girls that are from Hawaii that have Skype? I’d really would like to meet one & talk to them on Skype

  • barmtrail

If you want all men to be happy, just have them marry an island girl!
All the wars will stop and love will feel the air. Is there any woman more pretty and sexy than an island girl? NO WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
